How We Handle Your Information and What Our Cookies Do.
This page sets out how Valley Acoustics handles your personal information and what we use cookies for. It covers the whole site and every order placed through it.
The store is operated by Stansill Designs, a California corporation, doing business as Valley Acoustics, 9520 Owensmouth Ave, Suite 1, Chatsworth, CA 91311.
Our Refund Policy, Shipping Policy, Terms of Service and Legal Notice cover the commercial side of an order and sit alongside this page.
Privacy
We are a small shop. We are not in the data business, we do not buy or rent mailing lists, and we collect what an order actually requires.
What we collect
- Contact and order details — your name, email address, phone number, billing address, shipping address, what you ordered, and the fabric, size and mounting you selected
- Payment information — handled by Shopify and its payment processors. Card numbers are entered on their systems, not ours. We see the last four digits, the card type and whether the payment cleared
- Correspondence — emails, calls and messages about a quote, an order or an install, including any room photographs and dimensions you send us
- Device and browsing information — IP address, browser, device type and how you moved through the site, collected automatically by Shopify and by cookies
- Account details — if you create one, your login and saved addresses
For an installation or on-site consultation we also hold the site address and the access details you give us, such as parking, gate codes and stair or elevator arrangements.
What we use it for
- Building and shipping your order, and quoting freight to your address
- Answering your questions and keeping you posted on a build or a mill backorder
- Taking payment, issuing refunds, and keeping the records California requires for sales tax
- Scheduling a consultation, a delivery or an install
- Sending marketing email, but only if you asked for it. Every one has an unsubscribe link
- Keeping the store secure and spotting fraudulent orders
Who we share it with
We share personal information with the companies that make an order happen, and for no other purpose:
- Shopify, which hosts this store and processes orders
- Payment processors, to take payment and handle chargebacks
- UPS and freight carriers, who need your name, address and phone number to deliver and to call ahead about a freight window
- Our email and analytics providers, to send order notifications and understand how the site is used
- Installers and subcontractors, where a job needs them, limited to the site address and access details
We will also disclose information where the law requires it, in response to valid legal process, or to protect our rights. If the business is ever sold or merged, customer records would transfer with it.
We do not sell your personal information for money. Some advertising and analytics features can count as a “sale” or “share” under California law even where no money changes hands. You can opt out at any time by emailing us, or by browsing with Global Privacy Control enabled, which we honor.
Shopify
This store runs on Shopify, so Shopify processes personal information about your visit in order to run the store for us, and may store it outside the country you live in. Shopify sets out its own practices in the Shopify Consumer Privacy Policy, and you can exercise rights over data Shopify holds through the Shopify Privacy Portal.
How long we keep it
Order records are kept for at least four years, because California tax and warranty periods require it. Correspondence about a quote that never became an order is kept while it is still useful and then deleted. Marketing contacts are removed when you unsubscribe.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can email us to ask for a copy of what we hold about you, to have it corrected, or to have it deleted. We will not treat you differently for asking.
If you live in California, you have the right to know what we collect and disclose, to have it deleted, to have it corrected, to limit the use of sensitive personal information, and to opt out of any sale or sharing. You can use an authorized agent. We may need to verify your identity before acting, and we will respond within the time the law allows.
If you live in the UK or the European Economic Area, you also have the right to object to or restrict how we process your information, to receive it in a portable form, and to withdraw consent where we relied on it. For that purpose Stansill Designs is the data controller. Where we send your information outside the UK or EEA we rely on Standard Contractual Clauses or an equivalent recognized mechanism. You may complain to your local data protection authority.
Some requests we cannot fully grant. We cannot delete the record of a completed sale while tax law requires us to keep it, and we will tell you when that is the reason.
Children
This store is not intended for children and we do not knowingly collect information about anyone under 16. If you believe a child has given us their information, email us and we will delete it.
Security
Payments run over encrypted connections and card data never touches our own systems. No system is perfect, so please do not send us anything sensitive by plain email. If a breach affects your information, we will notify you as the law requires.
Cookies
What a cookie is
A cookie is a small file a website stores in your browser so it can recognize the browser on your next request. Without them the site has no way to remember that the panel you just added is yours.
What we use them for
- Essential — keeping your cart, moving you through checkout, and protecting the store against fraud and abuse. These cannot be switched off without breaking the store
- Analytics — Shopify's built-in analytics, which tell us which pages people read and where they leave. We look at this in aggregate, to decide what to photograph and what to explain better
- Marketing — where we are running advertising, cookies that let us measure whether an ad led to an order
Managing cookies
You can see, block and delete cookies in your browser settings:
Blocking analytics and marketing cookies costs you nothing here. Blocking essential cookies will stop the cart and checkout from working.
Global Privacy Control
If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as an opt-out of any sale or sharing of your personal information for that browser. We do not act on the older Do Not Track header, which browsers send inconsistently and which was never given an agreed meaning.
